To the canal!

Today began with more farmland, farm buildings, farm machinery, and farm stands. Today's fruit was cherries. We've probably eaten 6 pounds of cherries in the last week so we declined to purchase any more. Despite camping less than a mile from Lake Ontario last night we didn't actually see the lake until 17 miles into today's ride. It is large. You-can't-see-the-other-side kind of large. There were plenty of boats out and about and we stopped to watch them at a lunch break in Sodas Point, a small holiday-type of town on the southern shore. Later we watched yet more boats from a large and beautiful park in Pultneyville. We like boats. There were also plenty of boats being pulled behind vehicles on the road but we like those kinds of boats less.

In the afternoon the route took us away from the lake and inland, south towards the Erie Canal (Mike likes to call it the Spooky Canal). There are dirt bike trails alongside the canal and we'll be riding on these for almost 90 miles. Today we covered just 4 miles of the canal bikeway to Lock 30 by the town of Macedon. We're camping in a park next to the canal. Fun fact: we're on an island. We're sharing the island with a couple of bike tourists who are almost finished with their cross-country ride from Oregon to New York.

Tomorrow's snacks (purchased today in a rare moment of planning ahead): Blueberries, chocolate chip cookies, bananas, apples, scones, bread, crackers.

Today's mileage: 58 miles or 93 km if you're not in the US.

Farewell, Lake Ontario. We hardly knew ye.

  1. I am not sure where you found scones in the otherwise American marketing, but good for you for keeping the Brit side going!

We collected Kellie at the border and detoured to Fillippi's for a pizza on the way home so I guess we are making it an international day.

    Ride safely.

  2. Yes, yes, er, harumph, yes. Good to see the Brits still in the world cup. I suppose I must be a little more serious about getting into shape with you two riding so many miles in a single day. Mustn't slow down the train! By Jove it's been hot here. 115 the other day, but a mere 102 today, just a trifling.

Jolly good of you to keep on writing when you must be dead tired at the end of the day. Stiff upper lip. Keep up the good work. Toodles.

  3. Are there boats on the spooky canal? I would look it up but the heat has taken my energy. Have decided its too hit to walk to the beach at the moment. Glad i'm not cycling in this heat, i would be moaning. Keep snacking. Xx
