It was intensely windy as we woke up at the Leo Carrillo campground in Malibu. My Dad's tent nearly blew away as he was taking it down. As we pushed our first few pedal strokes back on Pacific Coast Highway the breeze blew up clouds of dust and grit that made it hard to see. Thankfully it was worst at the start and eased off as the miles rolled by. Then, on to familiar sights: Topanga Canyon, the Getty Villa, the Santa Monica Pier and the beach bike path.
After a lunch time break of a few pizza slices we rode over to the marina to check on the boat. All is well. A little dirty but it looks largely the same as we left it and ready to be restored to its former glory, or even better. We had a few more miles to go so we waved goodbye to the boat and hopped back on the bike path toward Hermosa Beach. My Aunt Kellie, Uncle Randy, and cousin Will live there and were very gracious to host us for Halloween. We ate an incredible home-cooked dinner of chili and corn bread and Caesar salad. Many thanks.
As usual, we were planning on short notice and didn't really know it would be Halloween when we arrived. Rach and I answered the door and gave out candy from a giant witch's cauldron. It was fun seeing the little (and some not so little) kids enjoying themselves. We could have made a very comfortable finish to our trip at the Kendall household but our plan was firm - onward to Poway.
We set off through lots of different cities: Redondo Beach, Torrance, Carson, Long Beach - lots of directions to watch out for. We took our first break at the water in Long Beach and enjoyed decadent ice creams. I mean, we're nearly done. Then to Seal Beach, Huntington, and Newport Beach, rejoining the Pacific Coast Highway and way-finding was much easier. Our final stop was in Dana Point where we stopped off at the market before our campground. A man in line was curious about our trip and story and ended up clapping for us. A very kind, enthusiastic guy.
We set up our tents at Doheny State Beach last night and are now waking up to our final day of riding. Thanks for following along. I think we'll have one more blog post to celebrate our finish.
