Oh hi Oh

Today after 10 miles of riding we entered Ohio! Goodbye to the vineyards of upstate Pennsylvania and hello to the abandoned industrial plants of Ohio. The roads across the state line took a sharp turn for the worse. Whoever was leading spent much of their time waving their arms like a crazy person in order to warn the following rider of perils on the pavement. We had a slight headwind today but otherwise the weather was generally good. We saw very few hills and that's how I like it.

Today's pedaling took us alongside Lake Erie for most of the day. We passed vacation towns where every other business was selling some kind of treat or fried food, and fancy neighborhoods where the residents have fenced off access to the lake so that the riffraff can't get in. We are undoubtedly riffraff. Today's lunch was brought to us courtesy of Mike's aunt Kellie, uncle Randy, and Subway. The Subway lady thought Mike's accent was Irish. Mike blamed it on his red beard but I think it's because we're on bikes. "Someone's riding their bike for fun? Must be European."

After lunch we pedaled past the 4000 mile marker. 4008.8 miles has brought us to the township of Perry where they let cyclists camp in their town park for free. There are also plenty of RVs in the campground with names like "Windjammer", "Hideout", "Solitude", and "Prowler". These names are deceiving. There's no way you'll be able to hide out in something the size of a double decker bus with a generator going. However, I suppose RV sales people would have a harder time if the vehicles were called names like "The Interstate", "Traffic Jammer", and "Awkward To Drive". Anyway, the campground is nice and we swam in the lake shortly after arriving. We also took advantage of their snack stand and bought veggie burgers and crisps, forgoing the monumental hassle of boiling some water for dinner. (It's not really a monumental hassle to boil water, we're just lazy).

  1. Another family collection. I used to work for Commercial Hydraulics, HQ in youngstown Ohio. Before you were born. Very very noisy here France just won the World Cup. Maybe England winning only happens once in a lifetime. The Othe Old Guy.

  3. I'm part French. Not sure which part, but I had to root for France. Tour coverage is sporadic; I am not happy. Instead of the Tour, they had on "cornholing". Yes, it's a thing. You throw bean bags at a box with a round hole cut in the top. Don't think I will be cornholing any time soon.

Bad roads make for unhappy riding. Mike may need a new front tire sooner than expected. It's always something. At least the weather is cooperating.

Hot and muggy here. Looks like we might be buying a condo. Of course, that's what we said last time. Heard anything about your erstwhile mast? When you get back, you'll have to go sailing. I think you will have done enough bicycling for awhile.

  4. Rach, You are becoming a true Californian with an expectation of public access to beaches. California established years ago that the beaches belong to all the citizenry but the east coast, with its left-over Gilded Age philosophy, does not embrace that concept.

Thank you for this round of stories.

    Ride safely.
