Ups and Downs

This morning I needed to pee. The bathroom was a fair distance away so it felt like a nature whiz would be a good way to start the day. There were a few trailers around so for neighborhood propriety the next step was to go down into the nearby gully before sprinkling the local vegetation. As I climbed back up the slope I spotted a small ziplock bag tucked into a hole in a tree. I had stumbled on someone's secret joint stash! I shifted them very slightly and then Rach and I went about our morning.

The Adventure Cycling route took us inland today and we spent more than thirty miles on Highway 35. The temperature was perfect, the trees shaded us from either side of the road, and the sun shone in a blue sky. There are lots of sailboats in people's yards up here. I'm constantly craning my neck to see what nautical treasures are greeting us as we pass by.

We had a peaceful lunch at Sebago Lake before pressing on to a town called Gray. There we befriended a hitchhiker at a gas station. I offered him some dried apricots. The riding through this stretch of the afternoon began to frustrate. I don't know where I came up with how much climbing we would do today, but I imagined it as X. The actual amount was: X + more. Up and down and up and down and up and down. After I got us briefly lost we arrived in Freeport, Maine back at the coast. Rach found a great local market and bought all the fixings for a Mexican food dinner.

We're camping tonight at the Wolfe's Neck Farm on a spit of land that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. We have joined the other peasants in the discount section of the campground. Have you ever been to a place that has four or five tiers of camp site pricing depending on how good the view is? I'm happy to report that we're glad with our site right next to the rows of organic vegetables. To my right is a view through a stand of trees to several small wooded islands. Dinner turned out incredible and we enjoyed spiced cider for our dessert. Tomorrow we ride toward Camden. Thanks for reading.

  1. You have GPS on one of your phones, yes? It will tell you where you are even if a short cut has turned out wrong. Pot isn't legal up there yet I guess. We don't have to hide it in California. Warm and sunny here. BTW, have you heard anything about the mast from the slothful, sleepy snail like mast maker methuselah?

    1. We have. We've had a few back and forth emails about some fabrication details. Buzz said the mast and boom were supposed to go to the anodizer last week. Not sure how long that takes before it goes back to them for further work and assembly.

  2. Anything left in those rows of organic vegetables?

    Ride safely.
