NYC

We rode a bit farther yesterday than we had first thought so that gave us plenty of time to laze around the Howard Johnson motel this morning. Our first phase was only 10 or so miles from Plainfield to Summit, NJ. Cool temperatures, overcast skies, and forests thick with trees as we climbed much of the way. In Summit we found the train station and bought our tickets to Penn Station.

An hour later we were in the Big Apple. Our friend Blake was kind enough to meet us at the station and suggested a place called Pizza Suprema. Rach got an "upside down slice" while I got the "Grandma slice." We sat at tables across from Madison Square Garden and enjoyed the sunshine.

Blake checked out one of the "Citi-bikes" and we all set off on a scenic bike path that followed the water on the western side of Manhattan. This is my first trip to New York City and it was incredible to be here. Books or TV shows don't adequately capture the vibrancy of the place. We rode past piers and parks, museums and ferries -  a good preview for the next couple of days we'll spend resting here. The bell on Blake's bike was especially useful in navigating the crowds sharing the path.

Next we passed Wall Street and the financial area, Battery Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Blake led the way and we climbed up the Williamsburg bridge and down into Brooklyn. There were a few wacko drivers but we all stayed in one piece. Blake has been very kind in letting us stay at his apartment and we certainly appreciate it.

After a trip to the laundromat to clean our mangy clothes we had ravioli back at the house and talked over some of the sights we might like to visit.

  1. New York City? Don't buy any salsa there! Actually, maybe being there on a bike will make it a lot more fun than by car or public transport. I have heard that they have a few good bike shops there. Watch out for the traffic. According to Richard's Bicycle Book, my Bible when I first started riding, and written by a guy who was from New York City, "Taxis are the enemy!" .

Still very warm here. Grandpa is driving your mother nuts. The neighbors built an "owl box" in their backyard some time ago. I have never seen it occupied but I am fairly certain there is a baby barn owl living in it and he cries all night. Have to keep the window closed if I don't want to hear it calling Mom for food. Won't last long though. He'll be out pretty soon and I hope it turns out that his favorite snack is gophers.

  2. Katie, Kellie and I visited the MET, the Guggenheim, and MOMA when they were looking at colleges. Hope you get to some or all of these museums. During one of my college summers I stayed in the NYU Weinstein dorm by Washington Square. You'll laugh at my limited experience with non-Midwest foods, but I think I had my first bagel in the Weinstein dorm cafeteria. And a happy memory, I watched the Nixon resignation on a dorm lobby television and partied that night with other students in the Village.

Have a wonderful time before you bicycle on!
