New York, New York

We are just about to wrap up two rest days in New York so it's time for a blog post.

We spent our first morning in New York exploring Prospect Park in Brooklyn. They had pedal boat rentals in the park but we had had quite enough of pedaling and gave it a miss. We met up with Blake for lunch at a Mediterranean restaurant where we consumed a large variety (and quantity) of foods. Hummus, pita, labneh (yogurt), falafel, and more. Afterwards we returned to Blake's house and had a relaxed afternoon before heading out into Manhattan to meet Joven, a friend of Mike's from high school. That meeting also involved food, first in the form of dumplings then ice cream for dessert. We've joked that our stay in New York is a vacation from our vacation, and have thus given ourselves permission to eat even more food than usual.

We continued the food theme the next morning at a small casual restaurant named B&H Dairy. It was recommended to us by a friend in LA (thanks, Dan!) and also by Blake. It's a classic New York lunch counter type-of-place which was almost destroyed a few years ago by a gas explosion. Mike had challah French toast while Blake and I had breakfasts of toast, eggs, and potatoes. From there we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, stopping off at a farmers' market in Union Square to acquire some apples, cider, and strawberries on the way. The museum is located in Central Park and is huuuuuuuge. We saw a transported Egyptian temple, arms and armor from the Middle Ages, a re-created Frank Lloyd Wright living room, Rodin sculptures, and European paintings from Picasso, Degas, Monet, and lots more.

After a few hours wandering around various exhibits we headed out to see what Central Park had going on. Blake had to leave for a French class so we sauntered on just the two of us. We saw model boats zooming around a lake, turtles swimming, tourists rowing around and plenty of pedicabs. In the evening we met up with Joven again, this time in Brooklyn at a pizza place. Joven used to be a bike messenger in New York so he knows all the good places to eat! The night finished at a dessert-type of place that had cupcakes, pie, cheesecake, cookies, and more. Martha's Country Bakery was awesome and we waddled home.

  1. I know visiting the MET may be a bus man's holiday when Mike has worked at the Getty and MOCA, but I am so glad that you two were able to see the various exhibits. I have to tease you though, because food got more of a shout out than Impressionists.

    Ride safely.

  2. I rode again today and yet another flat tire. I'm getting real tired of this. Carefully checked the tire and rim strip but found nothing. It's possible that some tiny sharp thing is finding it's way through my Continental Sport tire every time I ride or maybe the tire is too thin. Or. maybe there is something I am missing and the same devil is biting my tube each time. Oh well, I'll find it eventually. Rode the same route Mike, Rachel and I did a few years ago up to Daly Ranch then through downtown Poway and home on Pomerado. Felt ok but need to put lots more miles in. Did about 20 today. Wouldn't talk so much about me but there isn't much from you, which would be far more interesting than the ruminations of an old man. Soooooo, what's up?
