Last night we stayed at Ray and Melinda's along with another cyclist, Jon. We met Jon two weeks ago at the side of the road in Florida. At the time Jon was heading south but he has since turned around and caught up to us (with some help from a train). Jon has already ridden across the US on his trip and he's only a couple of weeks from finishing. This morning Ray and Melinda made us all a breakfast of giant waffles and eggs, and helped us stock up on granola bars.
The three of us set off along the highway and found ourselves zipping along at 15-17 mph. I maintain that it was my riding that pulled Mike and Jon along but they have suggested that a strong tailwind and the draft from passing trucks may have had something to do with it. We broke for lunch at a country store in a small town named Silverdale. The proprietor came out for a chat about our trips. Part way through Mike noticed that she had a gun on her hip. That's the first obviously-armed person we've seen on this trip. I expect we'll see more.
Mike and I decided that today would be a shorter day of 50 miles to offset yesterday (71 miles) and tomorrow (70-ish miles). Jon is pulling higher averages than we are and continued riding after we wished him well. Tonight we're staying at a campground in the Croatan national forest. Mike found a frisbee in a tree so that provided some entertainment. We are adding it to our supplies and will take it on a wondrous voyage to Los Angeles.

Well as we say it’s not a race, so let Jon win! So I passed on the cycle love and gave a loaded up cyclist, who was stopped in the village this morning at 7:00am, some cookies. He was very pleased. He was cycling to Lyon and then on to Italy and would love to do a trip like yours. He did say it’s very wild and remote around here (Aubusson) isn’t it? Hope you are still finding lots of shops and food. Xx
