Power

We began the day with yet another large breakfast from the hotel. We used their waffle iron to make a ginormous waffle, which was delicious. Our route took us back through the squares of Savannah and out to the north. There were a few too many train tracks for our liking but we stayed upright and made it out to Highway 17. Frequent passes by semi-trucks ("lorries" for the Brits) gave us a nice draft that pushed us along.

Today we entered our third state, South Carolina. We passed plenty of swamps, marshland, and rivers. Pine forests grew alongside the highway that were in various stages of growth or harvest. We took our lunch break in a park in Ridgeland, a small town near a railway line. The visitors' center had an exhibit about the line, which runs from Charleston to Savannah.

Our distance for today was 87.6 miles. We had a good rhythm and felt strong. Tonight we're staying at the Edisto motel, owned by a retired school teacher named Susan who inherited it. The motel was built in 1949 and our room came with a small green gecko.

Tomorrow: Charleston.
