This morning we gathered our gear from James' sailboat and reloaded the bikes. We took a picture with the boat and said goodbye to Sergei, our boat neighbor for the past two nights. As we were preparing to ride out of the marina parking lot, a man and woman in a convertible pulled alongside and asked what we were up to. Turns out the man had cycled across England in the 70s when he was 16. They were very encouraging of our trip - always nice to hear a "good for you" instead of the usual "aren't you scared of traffic?". They wished us well and we pedaled out onto Highway 17, where we would remain for the rest of the day.
There are a lot of historical sites along Highway 17. We saw a few plantations and stopped for a break in Darien, Georgia's second oldest planned town. The town originally had a British fort that was constructed in 1721. The town was mostly destroyed in 1863 by Union troops during the civil war. We saw ruins of old warehouses and a tavern. Thankfully they've rebuilt enough to add a gas station, which provided some good snacks. A little further down the road we saw a sign for "America's smallest church" so we stopped to take a look. It was indeed small with 12 chairs and a small pulpit. Built in 1949 and still looking good.
Later we stopped for another snack break (lots of snacks needed on this tour) at a Subway where we used one of our many Subway giftcards. Some of Mike's relatives very thoughtfully gave us a stack of giftcards just before we left, anticipating that Subways would be a frequent staple. Thank you to the Kendall family!
Today we're staying at a Travelodge like fancy people. We had beginner dinner at a very shiny Denny's. So shiny. Then we had second dinner at the hotel. We found out that Denny's offers all you can eat pancakes for just $4. We'll make them regret that offer. But that will have to be another time because we have free hotel breakfast tomorrow. Then we'll be heading into Savannah to do some exploring before spending the night there.

Atom doesn't look a whole lot different than another boat I know of....well, except for the mast.
ReplyDeleteSubway gift cards what a great idea, I wish I had thought of that. Great job Mike’s family. Xx
