1000 Miles
Let's go back in time, as is the way with blog posts.
Yesterday we went to a water park with Sarah and her family. Mike and I had joked about visiting some waterparks on the trip. It's possible we were more excited about it than the 2 year old. We went on a slide, a lazy river (a little loop with a current that carries you around), and did plenty of wading and splashing around. We had a relaxed afternoon at the house and a wonderful dinner in the evening followed by ice cream after the kids had gone to sleep. Sssh, don't tell them. Sarah is a friend of mine from grad school and a former co-worker from JPL so it was great to catch up. I feel very lucky that she was in town when we passed through. Many thanks to Sarah, Brandon, Djuna, and Jane for having us to stay for a couple of days!
This morning we waved goodbye to our incredible hosts and pedaled northwards away from Charleston. It was hot today: 92 F / 33 C. We got low on water at one point and Mike pedaled to a fire station (always lots of water in a fire station) to get some from their hose. Luckily it wasn't one of the high-pressure hoses.
As we rolled up to our lunch stop the odometer hit 1000 miles. Woohoo! On the one hand, 1000 miles is a long way and it's a solid milestone to hit. On the other hand, there are approximately 8000 miles left to go... Onwards we went.
We spent most of today going through small towns, very small towns. Seventy-two-people kind of small. The first two convenience stores on our map were closed unfortunately and our dreams of sodas, chips, and ice creams had to be delayed for approximately 30 miles until we reached Jamestown. We enjoyed their frigid air conditioning, used another of our Subway gift cards and bought a small bucket of soda for 79 cents. Brilliant.
Tonight we are unofficially camping in some woods off the highway. Lots of bugs, some huge spiders that like to jump, and one wild turkey seen so far. Tomorrow we push for North Carolina. Until then!
