Heaps of Beaches

Today was all about wealth. (Not ours, we have less than yesterday.) Mega yachts. Super yachts. Elaborate mansions. Towering skyscraper beachfront condos. Trump towers. Speed boats. A Bentley. Lush gardens and private docks. Woah.

We started the day riding out of downtown Miami across the Venetian Causeway and on to Miami Beach. Beautiful tree-lined drives wandered over canals along the coastline. Pine Tree Road was a stretch of particularly flashy palaces.

Next, we pounded through Trump country. Several gleaming towers that bear the mark of the tangerine-in-chief came and went on our right side. Lots of road construction through this stretch, and bumpy roads. Florida was redeemed by a town called Hollywood and the glorious miles of bike path we enjoyed right on the beach boardwalk. A live band serenaded us as we rode past and tons of vacationers enjoyed the sand and sun.

After seeing an ice cream shop Rach was taken with the idea of a deluxe dessert. Unfortunately, we pressed on, thinking another one would soon be in sight. It took at least another ten miles of determined riding before we arrived at Kilwin's in Lauderdale-by-the-sea. It was go time. Full waffle cone, chocolate-dipped, sprinkle-adorned, double scoop. Rach got some on her nose but it was adorable. Luckily, Kilwin's is a franchise and there may be as many 30 or 40 more still to come on our route.

Tonight, we descend further down into decadence at the Boca Raton Plaza Hotel and Suites. No campgrounds again here in Boca Raton so we used air miles to book our air-conditioned room. We have become very plush dandies.

Lots of beautiful scenery today. Bit of a wind kicking up in the afternoon but a fine day in Florida.

    Rach has excellent taste in desserts! Well done. But how could you leave out the chosen ice cream flavors? We need these details.

      I will do 10 hail marys. Rach says they were "fudgie brownie" and "Lauderdale-by-the-sea-mud."

Yesterday we officially entered the British part of the trip. The weather was overcast and cold (52 deg F/11 deg C). I'm pretty sure London was actually warmer. Due to the dismal weather we weren't inclined to take a break until about 24 miles in when we reached the town of Lindsay. This was the only town of the day with any kind of business though we were well stocked with snacks and lunch. We huddled together under the overhang of the roof as it began to rain. Gentle Undulations

"Gentle Undulations" sounds like a band from the 80s. It's also the best way to describe the terrain of southern Virginia. Our ride this morning took us past wheat fields in various stages of growth under a blue sky peppered with fat white clouds. We had no rain today, which was a nice change. We mostly rode on quiet rural roads with tortoises and snakes also making their way across the thoroughfare. We went past places with names lifted from my home country, places like Stonehenge, Isle of Wight, and Scotland. However - given that we went past all these places in the span of a few hours - the settlers decided not to copy the original geography. Around noon we took a 20-minute ferry ride across the James River to Jamestown. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in America and, boy, do people seem to like to visit it. Hitchhikers

Memorial Day (a public holiday in the US for the non-Americans reading) was a rest day for us and we spent it in Washington DC. We took a train into the city from Springfield, anticipating bigly huge crowds. We had to steel ourselves for the masses, we have not spent much time in busy areas lately. Perhaps the overcast weather kept people away but it wasn't particularly crowded. We observed various military groups and high school bands setting up for the afternoon's parade. We didn't stick around to see the parade start and instead went to some museums. We visited the National Air and Space museum and the National Museum of the American Indian, both were great. Later, we trekked back to Springfield. Last night's accommodation was 5 miles off the route so this morning we set out to rejoin the main route again.
